"Cowardice asks
the question -- is it safe?
Expediency asks the question -- is it politic?
Vanity asks the question -- is it popular?
But conscience asks the question -- is it right?
And there comes a time when one must
take a position that
is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular;
but one must take it because
it is right."

Still More Petty Meanness
from the Hospital ...
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
*
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Get
this! ... Marie
just attempted to call
her sister for the allotted
five minutes a day.
One of the hateful nurses claimed that
this was the
last
time this week
that she would be allowed to call her sister
because they (the hospital) are only allowing
Marie to call time
for
fives
minutes three times
a
week,
instead of
the five
minutes each
day,
which the guardian had promised
Marie.
We all dreaded hearing
this!
What new suffering does
Horizon/Regional West Medical Center
have planned for her sister this
week?
It took Marie
twenty minutes
to get a response from her sister
on
Mother's
Day, but we were
all hopeful
that calling everyday would have
a similar effect eventually.
Marie believes that her sister
is
still
a person and
is
still a part of
her family and
still
very much
loved,
in spite of her
sister's disability and
illness.
Please pray for the hospital and the
nurses!

*
*~~*~~*~~*
Please call
Todd
Sorensen,
the president of the hospital
and leave a
politely-worded message
requesting that the
telephone
service to
Marie's sister's room be restored
immediately so that her
ministers and family
may continue to
call and
read scripture
and other literature to her,
tell her of family events and
otherwise provide
some comfort and care to
her

DAY!

Human Dumping
at
Horizon/Regional West Medical Center
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
*
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*
Marie has been warned by
several social workers,
hospital workers, townspeople and clergy
that because her sister is a Medicare
patient
(and "resident" at the hospital due
to the foreclosure of her house and farm
and the abandonment by her children),
Horizon/Regional West
Medical Center
will seek to reduce her sister
--
through continuous drugging,
and suppressive and
physically-demeaning treatment
--
into a
nonresponsive,
vegetative
state,
so that she can
be denied
additional
restorative
therapies
and can then be
"dumped" into
a nursing home to die.
Perhaps as early as
this coming
week,
she will be transferred to an even
more
inadequate nursing
facility.
This will save the hospital
money.
This is the way these things are done in
Nebraska.
Her sister is left
unmonitored for hours
in a stuffy,
unventilated
room --
alternately between
perspiring from
the heat
and then
shivering from
chill
when the fan is finally turned onto her
while she is still damp with perspiration.
The blowing fan
irritates and
dries her eyes
and introduces dust and particles into
her
unprotected
tracheotomy,
which along with the
"chilling-sweats"
causes her to
cough and breath
heavily.
The intention is apparently to induce
pneumonia and respiratory
collapse.
The nurses demand that she stay on her
side
(even though it hurts her chest and heart)
and
not be allowed to sit up or
move onto her back.
Apparently, there is
no
medical
reason
for this measure; this is
not
for the
patient's ease and comfort,
but
solely for the comfort of the
nurses.
To keep Marie's sister
as
nonresponsive and
compliant
as possible so
that the nurses do not have
to "waste time" caring for her sister's needs
or tending to her comfort,
the nurses
drug
her and put
back to sleep
each time
she attempts
to move or
speak.
Marie was granted
less than five
minutes
to speak to her sister yesterday,
but the nurse abruptly
cut off the line
and injected her sister with
"pain
medication,"
sending her back into what
the nurse called
HS
("hours of
sleep").
Every attempt her sister has made to
express herself as a
person --
including her
visible response
and
agitation
during discussions of sending her
to a nursing home -- is deemed to be
"pain,"
and is
shut
down with
more
drugs.
Once she is drugged,
she is
denied
the privilege
visitors or
calls,
because she is
"lethargic."
Marie has repeatedly asked that
her sister receives both
physical
and
speech
therapy
as often as possible,
as well
cognitive
therapies.
Clearly, though, she receives
no therapy and
little actual care
during the weekends.
Given the demeanor of the
nurses,
we are
concerned
that
she may come to harm
over the
long holiday
weekend.
There has to be a way to get her out
of this miserable hospital into somewhere
that can give her proper care!
Many have counseled that they believe
that the only recourse in this kind
of situation is through the courts.
Please continue
to pray for Marie's sister's
recovery and safety
and the well-being of the family!

Calling Any and All People
of Goodwill
in the Scotts Bluff, Nebraska
Area
*~~*~~*~~*
*
*~~*~~*~~*
The last time that she spoke to her
sister earlier this week --
before the hospital refused to allow her
to call into her sister's room anymore
(see below) --
Marie asked her sister
to open her mouth
for the nurses and
ask the nurses to feed
her.
Three
friends have now
reported that
when they have visited her this week,
Marie's
sister opens her
mouth
wide --
like a baby
bird
-- and
cries.
Still, the nurses have not feed her,
though her lip is now so swollen
from biting her lip in hunger
that it has to be
bandaged.
She can bite down on the suction tube
and she is, of course, swallowing her own
saliva.
We are asking that
anyone
who has a kind heart and an hour to spare
go over to her hospital room (Room 115)
at the
Regional West Medical
Center
and bring a small container of
organic
yogurt
with
fruit
such as
blueberries,
raspberries, or
cherries
and a popsicle
stick.
*~~*~~*~~*
*
*~~*~~*~~*
Request the head nurse's permission
and/or training
first!
Please use the
popsicle stick
to drip
into the
yogurt and let her lick the
yogurt from the
popsicle
stick.
She has a tracheotomy and this
could be dangerous to her.
Request the head nurse's
permission
and/or training
first!
If this seems a desperate request --
perhaps even bizarre --
you have probably never witnessed your
loved one starving to death in front
of your
face.
Believe us when we say that this experience
puts a whole new spin on
reality.
*~~*~~*~~*
*
*~~*~~*~~*
Marie has tried to explain to the
doctors and nurses
that when her sister has had a large dose
of
antibiotics, especially those
as powerful as
Vancomycin
and
Piperacillin,
she needs to have
some
probiotics (such as those in yogurt)
in order to settle
her digestion.
She will need to
eat a little bit
at a time
over several hours about
four or five times
a day
over the weekend,
until we can get her some help this next week.
We have heard that several in the Scotts Bluff
area that this hospital is infamous for
not
feeding disabled people and that
the
FAMILY OR
GUARDIAN
MUST SIT HER UP
AND FEED HER
THEMSELVES,
or she is likely to starve to death!
If you can
volunteer to help Marie's sister
on a regular basis for the next several weeks,
please leave your name with
the first floor desk nurse for the guardian
and Marie will ask the guardian
to
provide payment
for you
(at minimum wage)
from her sister's monthly disability.
We had been told that no one else could feed
her but the nursing staff,
but apparently that is not
true.
Please, please, please someone help
to feed her over the weekend
to keep her alive until we can get
a paid worker there on a regular
basis.

A friend has reported that when
she visited yesterday,
Marie's sister was in severe pain,
crying,
with tears staining her face.
Her arms are both splinted and wrapped
nearly to the elbow
due to the cramping of her arms --
which is the result of lying on her sides
(and consequently her arms)
since the surgery on March 23.
The nurses refuse to allow her to sit up
or lie on her back!
They merely keep her on her sides and
injects with pain killer
if an outraged visitor complains
that her sister is obviously suffering
and crying
from lying constantly in
this position --
with her arms strapped up in
splints.
The room was overheated and
Marie's sister was covered in perspiration.
(This was after Marie had already called
earlier that day and --
having heard her sister breathing heavily
and suffering from the heat --
had requested that
the fan be turned on in her room.)
This kind of neglect and abuse is what the
Nebraskan Medical Board calls
"medical treatment?"
"I suppose these nurses spend the weekends
torturing kittens
and pulling the wings off butterflies,"
said an astonished friend.
"I hope the investigators throw the whole
lot of them in jail and
the judge sentences them to endure the
same tortures that that inflict on their patients."

We have heard today that
several
multipage
EXTENSIVE COMPLAINTS
regarding the severe mistreatment
of Marie's sister
have been filed against
Regional/Horizon
West Medical Center,
their social workers and others
with several
Nebraska state agencies.
We will post details as we receive them.
As far as we know,
Marie's sister has
not
yet received
full nutrition,
nor
has she
been allowed to sit upright,
in order to prepare to eat normally.
She has
not been seen by the
the neurologist, gastrointestinal specialist,
or cardiac specialist,
nor
has she received
full
physical or speech
therapy.
There are no plans,
as of yet, to transfer Marie's sister
to a specialized facility with better
diagnostic and restorative care facilities.
Marie has still not received
medical consent from the guardian.

and
Coming
Full Circle
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*

The same intrepid friend
who had last night documented
that Marie's sister is, in fact, conscious
returned to her bedside today --
with the court-appointed guardian,
Ms. Garza, in tow!
The friend repeated the same sort
of commands as the previous
night and Marie's sister repeated
similar
responses!
Even the guardian had to agree that
Marie's sister is
responsive.
There is no doubt that Marie's sister
IS CONSCIOUS
and that
Regional/Horizon West
Medical Center
is starving a conscious --
but disabled -- person to death.
At least six individual persons have seen
Marie's sister respond to requests
or commands --
such as, open your mouth,
move your leg,
or push on my hand.
The last time she had spoken to her sister
by phone some weeks ago, her sister
tried very hard to respond to her,
and said, "Hi," several times, and then
spoke one more syllable as plain as
day:
REE
the name that she used to call Marie
when they were little.
This past Sunday, Mother's Day,
Marie was permitted
to speak with her sister for a few minutes,
since the children --
on the advise of the hospital
and social workers --
have completely abandoned their mother.
In the middle of a sentence,
her sister, normally completely silent,
interrupted Marie
with a small, high, squeaky cry:
Reeeee!?
Marie was startled and struggled
to regain her composure,
explaining to her sister
how she should try very hard
to respond to the nurses and doctors.
Again, Marie was interrupted
by her sister:
a huge, perfect sigh,
which was so quintessentially
normal and like her sister
that even a non-family bystander
understood exactly
what it clearly meant:
"Yes, but when do I get out of
here."
If they are unable to heal her,
send her to somewhere
with more experience:
the University of Colorado hospital
has the facilities
to care for Marie's sister.

Deja Vu -- All Too
Familiar
*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*

"Are you going to sue? Who's Marie's
attorney?"
That's what the nurse at
Horizon West Medical Center,
-- which cooperates with
Regional West Medical
Center
--
asked.
Marie was stunned, "What?"
No one had said ANYTHING about
suing ANYONE.
It has been insinuated
by several different sources, that,
apparently,
in order to get the feeding-tube
for her sister restored,
Marie is going to have to sign a waiver
specifying that she and the children
will not sue the hospital
for malpractice --
or, alternatively, find some other way
to reassure the hospital
that they will not have to face
any consequences
for their mistakes and misconduct.
Otherwise, the small-town medical team
at
Regional/Horizon West
Medical Center
intends to starve Marie's sister to death,
if she doesn't die from the
medication-induced kidney failure first.
We are back at the same filthy
scenario:
Dead patients tell no tales.
A different sister, but the
same dirty little-town politics.
Marie's sister is marked to die for the
Almighty Dollar, once again.
The "care" that Marie's sister is receiving
is at best inappropriate
... or completely nonexistent.
According to several nurses,
Marie's sister does not even have a
primary care physician
at the moment.
No one is watching for her care!
And the doctors and nurses know
that what is happening is --
Just.
Plain.
Wrong.
"Do they teach this corruption in
nursing and medical school these days,
or do they learn it in some profane
version of Sunday
school?"
Marie commented quietly to a friend.
"Money!?
Is that what it comes down to
for these ... people?
Do they honestly believe that the entire
state of Nebraska
--
and every other mid-western state
put together
--
could possibly
come up with enough
money to pay
for my sister's
life?"

A friend checked on Marie's sister today.
The nasal feeding-tube has
still not been restored,
so she is getting only glucose.
She is still on her side, because
the nurses are forbidden
to help her sit upright in the bed.
So, the friend turned on the
classical radio station
and asked her,
"Listen, if you like this kind of music,
move your left foot!"
And Marie's sister
MOVED HER LEFT FOOT!
Not her right foot, her LEFT foot.
So, the friend asked,
"Can you open your mouth?
Open your mouth."
And Marie's sister
OPENED HER MOUTH! --
not very big
(a kind of "little fishy"
mouth),
but she definitely understood
the request! :-)
If they won't feed
her, we will have
to help her to eat on her own --
since she has not been able
to receive nutrition
since the
UNsuccessful stomach-tube
surgery on
April
26 --
almost

We are very concerned that someone

A Godly Thought:
The
Starfish
~~~~*~~~~
One day a young man was walking
along a deserted beach.
He saw a frail old man
bend over and
pick up a starfish
and put it back
into the receding ocean.
He watched for awhile,
and to his amazement,
the old man picked up
one starfish
after another and placed it
back into the water.
The young man walked up to
the old man, who was holding
a small starfish in his hand,
and said,
Old man, why are you putting
starfishes into the
ocean.
They will die on the drying sand
unless I put them
into the
water. he
replied.
But thats silly! There are
thousands of beaches
in the world and
millions of starfish
who will die each day.
Why should you waste
your time
on such a meaningless
act.
The old man paused, and
in reply he tossed the starfish
far out into the water.
After a while he spoke,
It makes a difference to this
one.
