As mentioned on the Letters to the Editor and Newspaper Article Page,
the President of First Savings and Loan Bank spoke to friends who had
established a Donation Account for the Marie O'Hara,  who had been
injured and disabled by pesticides while attending SBU and asked that
the account be closed in order, he said, to get him "out of the doghouse."

According to the bank president, several prominent townspeople
had called the First Savings Bank threatening to withdrawal their
funds if the bank did not immediately close the Marie O'Hara
Donation Account and cease from assisting the pesticide-injured
student in any way.

Marie's friends chose not to close the account because other Bolivar
banks and businesses had also indicated that they would prefer not
to assist the student because of the hostility of individuals related
to Southwest Baptist University and the local Baptist churches.

Even the morning host of the local call-in radio show slammed down
the phone and refused to allow calls from friends who wanted
to wish Marie well.

When the radio host was questioned about the reason for refusing
to allow Marie's name or situation to be used on the radio, the host
replied that SBU had threatened to pull their advertisements.

Though he expressed regret, but explained that he had no choice as he
was "losing money" by supporting attempts to raise funds for Marie's
living expenses and health care.

After a series of assaults against Marie by associates of SBU further
endangered and weakened Marie's health, friends placed a series of
seven advertisements in the
BOLIVAR HERALD-FREE PRESS in
the hope of obtaining enough funds to move Marie to a safer, less
hostile environment.

However, the Donation Account received only one anonymous donation
of $50 -- which, unfortunately, did not even cover the cost of placing these
seven advertisements (which cost about $20 each -- $140 total).

No one from the Southwest Baptist University staff or administration
gave or even offered financial assistance.

In fact, SBU officials instructed others not to speak to the student or to
her friends and actively (and illegally) discouraged any kind of assistance
from other students and church or community organizations.

A new donation account has been established at the Bank of Hillsboro
(in Hillsboro, Missouri) in order to assist with Marie's medical
and living expenses.

BENEFIT SALE FOR SBU STUDENT DISABLED BY PESTICIDE
POISONING WHILE ATTENDING CLASSES AT SBU.
 DONATED ITEMS WELCOME, OCT. 13 ...

                                        ~~~~~~~*******~~~~~~~
[Please Note:
The Benefit Sale was held the day of the Southwest Baptist University
Homecoming parade -- which was to pass directly by the house where
the Benefit Sale was being held.
In order to direct traffic to the Benefit Sale, several signs had been posted
on nearby telephone poles.  After the parade, several of the alumni, who
had seen the signs during the parade, began to gather at the Sale.
Suddenly, a black sports car with an SBU Parking permit on its bumper,
screeched up to one of the posted signs.
A man -- who looked suspiciously like the son of one of the administrators --
jerked open the car door and, in one motion, aggressively ripped the sign
from the post.
A father sitting in his car opposite the Benefit Sale, was disturbed by this
display of open malice, and sent his little girl over to the Sale supervisor.
"We saw what happened.  Here's some money for a new sign," she said.
Most of Marie's personal belongings, kitchen utensils, clothes, art supplies,
and other items were sold during the sale -- around $150 worth.  An older
couple, who were SBU alumni, donated about $20.
All the remaining Benefit Sale signs were also forcibly torn from their posts.
